Landform, or terrain, is the basis of any landscape, forming the (roughly) horizontal foundation upon which all else is arrayed. Landform is made up of various underlying geological substrates, with diverse surface coverings: exposed rocks, sand, gravel, synthetic paving, grass, leaf litter, and so on. Usually we don't see the constituent material directly, but rather the covering -- often vegetation -- that forms the surface.
